Why rent a home in Denver

Denver is usually one half of a trip: city days plus mountain days. A rental with a kitchen, a garage or driveway for the rental car, and space to dry gear after hiking or skiing fits that pattern far better than a downtown hotel room.

The city housing stock also makes rentals attractive. Brick bungalows in the Highlands, Victorian flats in Capitol Hill, and converted warehouse lofts in LoDo all give you more room and more character than a chain hotel at the same price.

Best neighbourhoods to stay

First-time visitors without a car should stay in LoDo, near Union Station, or in RiNo, where restaurants, breweries, the A Line airport train, and the 16th Street corridor are all walkable.

Families and longer stays do better in the Highlands, Capitol Hill, or Cherry Creek, where whole houses and two bedroom apartments are common. If the mountains are the main goal, consider Golden or the western suburbs for faster access to I-70 and Red Rocks.

Things to do

Spend a morning at the Denver Art Museum and History Colorado, then walk to the State Capitol for the mile-high step and Union Station for lunch. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science and the Botanic Gardens each fill an afternoon, and City Park has the zoo and the best skyline view in town.

Evenings are about food halls, breweries, and live music: Denver Central Market and Avanti in RiNo and LoHi, dozens of taprooms, and concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 30 minutes west and worth planning a night around.

Mountain day trips

Denver is the practical base for the Front Range. Red Rocks and Golden are 30 minutes away, Boulder and the Flatirons 45 minutes, Rocky Mountain National Park about 90 minutes, and Idaho Springs hot springs an hour up I-70.

Ski resorts including Loveland, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Vail sit between 1 and 2 hours west, traffic permitting. Leave before 7am on winter weekends and return after 6pm to avoid the worst of the I-70 crawl, or use a resort shuttle bus instead of driving.

September and October are the best weeks of the year: warm days, cool nights, golden aspens in the mountains, and fewer crowds. May through August brings long sunny evenings and afternoon thunderstorms.

Winter is dry, sunny, and cold, with the city serving as a ski gateway rather than a snowy destination in itself; rates dip outside holiday weeks. Remember the altitude: 1,600 metres means you should drink more water and take the first day easy.

Getting around

Downtown, LoDo, RiNo, and Capitol Hill are walkable, and the RTD light rail, buses, and the A Line airport train cover most rental neighbourhoods. The free MallRide runs the length of the 16th Street corridor.

Rent a car for mountain days, not for the city. Winter mountain driving needs all-wheel drive or snow tyres under Colorado traction laws, and downtown garages charge by the hour, so confirm whether your rental includes a parking space.

Travel and booking tips

Ask for the Denver short-term rental licence number, confirm off-street parking, and check whether the unit has air conditioning: many historic homes rely on evaporative coolers, which struggle in July heat waves.

If you plan to ski, verify gear storage, a mud room or garage, and whether the driveway is plowed. Book September foliage weekends and ski-season holidays two to four months ahead.
