About Pensacola

Pensacola was settled by the Spanish in 1559 — six years before St. Augustine — and its five colonial flags have each left a mark, from the 18th-century forts guarding the pass to the live-oak shade of Seville Square. Downtown's Palafox Street is one of the South's best-preserved main streets, lined with restaurants and galleries.

Across the bay, Santa Rosa Island holds Pensacola Beach and miles of protected National Seashore — some of the whitest, softest sand in the world. Naval Air Station Pensacola is the cradle of naval aviation, home to the free National Naval Aviation Museum and the Blue Angels, who practice over the beach most spring and summer Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Vacation rentals in Pensacola

Pensacola vacation rentals center on Santa Rosa Island: Gulf-front condo towers at Pensacola Beach, raised beach houses on stilts along the quieter stretches, and sound-side homes for calmer water. Perdido Key offers a low-key alternative at the western edge.

Summer Saturdays turn over most island rentals; book three to six months ahead for June and July. The National Seashore sections mean you can always find an empty stretch of sand. Air show weeks (July and November) book solid early. History lovers should split a stay with downtown to walk the historic district. Continue east along the coast to Panama City Beach for a Panhandle road trip.

Families, history buffs, and beach purists

Pensacola is one of the few beach destinations where the cultural programming rivals the sand. Families split days between the museum, forts, and beach; couples gravitate to downtown dining and sunset sails; beach purists head for the National Seashore, where the dunes stretch empty for miles.
