Hilton Head Island vacation rentals
Twelve miles of Atlantic beach, championship golf, and shaded low-country rental villas.
Best time to visit
April through early June and September through October: warm water, mild days, and lower rates than peak July.
Rental types
Beachfront villas · Oceanfront condos · Golf-course homes · Family beach houses · Marsh-view cottages
Getting there
Fly into Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) for regional service or Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV), about 50 minutes away. Charleston (CHS) is roughly two hours by car. A car is useful, but the island's 60+ miles of paved leisure paths make bikes the local way to get around.
Hilton Head Island vacation rentals
Rentals here are the main lodging story: gated-community villas, oceanfront condos, and freestanding beach houses far outnumber hotel rooms. Most properties sit inside a planned community (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard, Port Royal, Palmetto Hall), which usually means gated entry, shared pools, tennis, and bike paths that run straight to the beach.
Weekly Saturday-to-Saturday bookings are standard in summer, while shoulder season opens up shorter stays. Check whether beach access is a walk, a shuttle, or a bike ride — 'oceanfront', 'ocean-oriented', and 'second row' mean very different things here — and confirm whether guest passes for community amenities are included.
Beaches
Twelve miles of hard-packed, gently sloping Atlantic sand run the length of the island''s east side. The firm surface is unusual and useful: you can ride a beach cruiser at low tide, and strollers and wagons roll easily. Coligny Beach Park is the most equipped access point, with showers, swings, restrooms, and metered parking; Driessen Beach Park and Islanders Beach Park are calmer family choices; Burkes Beach and Folly Field sit mid-island.
Tides matter more than at most beach destinations — low tide exposes hundreds of feet of flat sand and tidal pools that kids love, while high tide narrows some stretches considerably.
Golf
Hilton Head is a golf destination first for many visitors, with roughly two dozen courses on and around the island. Harbour Town Golf Links, the Pete Dye layout that hosts the PGA TOUR''s RBC Heritage each spring, is the marquee round, finishing along Calibogue Sound beneath the lighthouse.
Other well-known options include Atlantic Dunes and Heron Point in Sea Pines, the Robert Trent Jones and Arthur Hills courses at Palmetto Dunes, and Palmetto Hall. Many rental communities offer guest tee-time privileges — worth asking about before you book if golf is the point of the trip.
Family vacations
The island is engineered for families: calm surf, wide bike paths separated from traffic, low building heights, and no honky-tonk strip. A typical day runs beach in the morning, pool in the afternoon, then ice cream at Coligny or Harbour Town.
Add-ons that consistently work with kids include dolphin cruises out of Broad Creek and Harbour Town, kayak and pedal-boat rentals on the Palmetto Dunes lagoon, the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn, and the alligators and boardwalks of Sea Pines Forest Preserve.
Outdoor activities
Beyond golf and the beach, the island is a strong paddling and cycling base. Kayak and SUP tours run through the salt marsh and Broad Creek, fishing charters head to Calibogue Sound and offshore reefs, and tennis and pickleball courts are attached to most resort communities.
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, just across the bridge, has flat trails and heavy bird activity, and day trips by boat run to Daufuskie Island.
Restaurants and shopping
Expect Lowcountry seafood: shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, oysters, and fresh catch from the local shrimp fleet. Waterfront dining clusters at Harbour Town, Shelter Cove Harbour, and Skull Creek on the island''s north end, where sunset tables book out in summer.
Shopping is concentrated at Coligny Plaza (beach gear, souvenirs, casual food), Shelter Cove Towne Centre (larger stores and a marina park), and the Tanger Outlets on Highway 278 just off-island.
Best areas to stay
Choose Sea Pines for space, forest, and golf, with Harbour Town as your evening anchor. Choose Coligny or Forest Beach if you want to walk to restaurants and public beach services without a gate pass. Choose Palmetto Dunes for the widest family villa selection and lagoon activities, and Shipyard or Port Royal for a quieter oceanfront stay near mid-island shopping.
North-end areas like Hilton Head Plantation and Windmill Harbour are residential and marsh-facing rather than beach-facing — good value, but plan on driving to the sand.
Best time to visit
Spring (April–early June) is the sweet spot: 70s to low 80s, blooming azaleas, and ocean water warming into the upper 70s. The RBC Heritage in mid-April fills rentals island-wide, so book early or work around it.
Summer is peak family season — hot, humid, busy, and the priciest weeks of the year. September and October bring warm water, thinner crowds, and the best rates of the warm months; hurricane season runs through November, so travel insurance is worth considering. Winter is mild and very quiet, with monthly snowbird rentals and discounted golf.
