Getting there

Fly into Cancun International (CUN), 25 minutes from the Hotel Zone, with direct flights from across North America and Europe. The Hotel Zone is one long strip — buses run its length every few minutes.

About Cancun

Cancun was purpose-built on a sandbar in the 1970s, and the beach that made it famous remains extraordinary — powdery white coral sand and Caribbean water that shifts from turquoise to deep sapphire. The Hotel Zone's northern tip (Punta Cancun) offers the calmest swimming; the long eastern stretch faces the open Caribbean with bigger waves.

The location is the real luxury: ferries to Isla Mujeres' Playa Norte (one of the world's best beaches) leave every half hour, Chichen Itza's pyramid is a day trip inland, and the Yucatan's cenotes — limestone swimming holes sacred to the Maya — dot the jungle in every direction. Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya stretch an hour south.

Vacation rentals in Cancun

Cancun vacation rentals concentrate in the Hotel Zone: beachfront condos and aparthotels with pools and direct sand access, often at better value than the all-inclusives for longer stays. Downtown (El Centro) offers local-priced apartments near markets and taquerias for travelers who prioritize authenticity over ocean views.

Christmas through Easter is peak season — book months ahead. Hurricane season (August–October) brings the lowest rates and mostly fine weather with some storm risk; travel insurance is smart then. For swimmable-water proximity, target Punta Cancun and the northern Hotel Zone; the southern stretch is quieter but wavier.

Cancun FAQs

Is Cancun safe for tourists?

The Hotel Zone and tourist areas are heavily patrolled and millions visit safely each year. Use licensed taxis or pre-booked transfers, stay in tourist zones at night, and take normal precautions with valuables.

When is seaweed season in Cancun?

Sargassum seaweed typically peaks May through September, varying by year and beach. The north-facing Punta Cancun area and Isla Mujeres' Playa Norte are often clearer; hotels rake daily.

How far is Cancun from Chichen Itza?

About 120 miles — 2.5 hours by car or tour bus. Most visitors go with a guided tour that combines the ruins with a cenote swim and lunch in Valladolid.
