Best time to book

December to April for dry, calm weather and the best visibility; May, June, and November for warm water at lower rates.

Common rental types

Getting there

Fly directly into Cozumel (CZM), or into Cancún (CUN) and connect by shuttle to Playa del Carmen and a 45 minute passenger ferry to San Miguel. Ferries run roughly hourly through the day. Rentals are typically 5 to 20 minutes from the ferry pier by taxi.

Where to stay in Cozumel

San Miguel de Cozumel

The island only town: plaza, markets, restaurants, dive shops, and the ferry pier. Apartment rentals here need no car and cost the least.

South Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera Sur)

Condo buildings along the calm west shore, closest to Palancar and Colombia reefs. The classic choice for divers and snorkelers.

North Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera Norte)

Sandier beaches and quieter condo complexes a few minutes north of town, good for families who want to swim off the beach.

Corpus Christi & mid-island coast

Ocean-view villas with private pools between the reefs and town. Peaceful, but you will want a rental car or scooter.

El Cedral & inland

Local village life and cheaper long-stay houses away from the water, with a short drive to the southern beach clubs.

East Coast (wild side)

Open Caribbean surf, beach bars, and a handful of rentals. Beautiful and empty, but currents make most beaches unsafe for swimming.

Punta Sur & the far south

Near the national park, lighthouse, and lagoon. Very few rentals, unbeatable snorkeling and birdlife on your doorstep.

Marina & Puerta Maya area

Close to the cruise piers and dive marinas. Convenient for early dive departures, busiest on cruise-ship mornings.
