Getting there
Fly into Charleston International (CHS), about 20 minutes from downtown. Interstate 26 connects to Columbia and I-95. Downtown is walkable end to end, but a car makes Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, and Isle of Palms practical.

Where to stay in Charleston
Historic Downtown
South of Calhoun Street: piazzas, church steeples, and walking access to nearly every restaurant and tour. The most expensive rentals and the least parking.
French Quarter
Art galleries, the waterfront, and the cobblestones of Chalmers Street. Compact, atmospheric, and steps from Waterfront Park.
South of Broad
The grandest antebellum homes, the Battery seawall, and Rainbow Row. Quiet residential streets with very limited rental inventory.
King Street & Upper King
Shopping downtown by day and the city's densest bar and restaurant strip by night. Best for couples and groups who want to walk everywhere.
Folly Beach
A surf-town barrier island 20 minutes out, with beach cottages, a fishing pier, and a casual bar-and-taco main street.
Sullivan's Island
Residential, low-key, and unmarked by high-rises. Wide beaches, a handful of excellent restaurants, and Fort Moultrie.
Isle of Palms
The family beach choice, with the widest supply of rental homes, condos, and the gated Wild Dunes resort community.
Mount Pleasant
Across the Ravenel Bridge: newer homes, easier parking, better value, and a 10-minute drive to both downtown and Isle of Palms.
